While many have fallen for the charms of cruising from Split to historic Dubrovnik, today’s discerning yacht traveler is looking for something more—places that cruise ships and tour buses simply can’t reach. I recommend the Kornati Islands, the definitive 2026 trend for those seeking the true, untouched soul of Croatia. Discover a labyrinth of raw beauty and secluded anchorages that remain one of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets.

My recent journey into the heart of the Kornati Archipelago
While standard yachting itineraries beautifully capture Croatia’s iconic UNESCO heritage towns, my recent journey was about something deeper: finding the intersection of raw natural beauty and authentic local culture.

Our private charter yacht allowed us to slip into quiet corners that others simply bypass. My most cherished memories are from the family-owned konobas (traditional restaurants) tucked away in hidden coves. There, we were greeted as guests by families who took immense pride in sharing their local catch.
If you are drawn to the idea of a less-traveled Croatia, I invite you to discover this coastal cruising experience for yourself. It is a journey defined by serenity, intimacy, and the kind of hospitality you can only find when you leave the busy world behind.
Our Heart of Croatia “Off the Beaten Tourist Track” Itinerary
Day 1: Sibenik to Primosten
Begin your journey with a unique experience featuring two UNESCO World Heritage sites. First, explore the intricate Saint James’ Cathedral, and then visit the historic Saint Nicholas’ Fortress.
Day 2: Primosten to Skradin
Next, enjoy the classic Mediterranean vibe of Primošten. Here you can admire the stone architecture (Statue of Our Lady of Loreto: one of the largest shrines to the Virgin Mary in the World), before walking along pebble beaches.
Day 3: Skradin to Kornati
Skradin, one of Croatia’s oldest towns, is the gateway to Krka National Park. Diners, don’t miss the legendary Skradin Risotto, a masterpiece of patience made with veal slow-cooked for up to ten hours. Also try their 14th-century Skradin Cake, made of walnuts, almonds, honey, chocolate, and citrus.
Day 4: Kornati to Zadar
Explore the Kornati Archipelago, where 89 islands and islets offer a surreal, lunar-like appearance. This unique terrain of white stone set against deep cobalt blue waters provides a breathtaking backdrop on your journey.
Day 5: Zadar to Dugi Otok
Day 6: Dugi Otok to Zut
Dugi Otok translates to “Long Island”, and is an island of extremes. Visual delights feature white sands and historic lighthouses. Its massive vertical cliffs rise 160 meters (1.5 football fields) above the Adriatic. Below the surface, the dramatic drop-off continues to depths of nearly 300 feet. Keep your binoculars ready, as these cliffs are a renowned nesting ground for the peregrine falcon.
Day 7: Zut to Murter
Continue to Žut, the second largest island in the Kornati archipelago and a nautical sanctuary known for luxury and world-class dining. Your Captain can reserve the culinary star Festa, a family-run restaurant.
Day 8: Murter to Sibenik
Finally, stop at Murter to enjoy its diverse coastline and sandy beaches. Family-friendly Slanica Beach is shallow, sandy, and perfect for children and non-swimmers. Enjoy a relaxing final swim before returning to Šibenik.
Discover the Uncharted Side of Croatia
Standard yachting itineraries often focus on iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites and bustling medieval towns. While those are indeed spectacular, my favorite way to experience this region is by diving deeper into the natural beauty and living culture of the Kornati Islands.
By choosing a private charter, we aren’t limited to cruise ships’ deep water ports. I’ve personally spent time in the local konobas—small, family-run restaurants where the owners treat you like a guest in their own home. It is this combination of rugged, untouched scenery and intimate local hospitality that makes the Kornati Islands a must-visit for 2026.
