Captain Mike Finnagan’s suggested 10 day itinerary cruising the coast of Maine. You may shorten your journey or even extend. Yacht itineraries are always customized to your interest and schedule!
Our Maine coastline offers much of the same features as Alaska’s “last frontier” boasts: areas of wilderness, few roads, many inlets and harbors uninhabited with miles of coastal shoreline that is full of wildlife and peaceful nature trails.
Day 1 Portland Pick up in Portland, ME- Maine’s largest city is an active seaport for ocean going vessels. Head in by foot to the historic Old Port and enjoy the various shops and restaurants along the historic cobblestone streets.
Day 2 Booth Bay Harbor
Leave Portland at first light and take in the rugged coastline peppered with islands and lighthouses, including the island of Seguin, home to the highest lighthouse on the Maine coast. End the day at the dock in Boothbay Harbor. This is a picturesque and beautiful summer coastal town full of attractions with a strong heritage of ship building dating back to the 15th Century. Spend the evening hauling lobster traps and catching your own fresh maine lobster to be prepared to prefection back on board.
Day 3 Linekin Harbor/ Monhegan Island
Depart Boothbay for an adventure offshore 15 miles off the coastline to the renowned Monhegan Island. Monhegan is a small, rocky Island ten miles from the nearest mainland and scarcely a square mile in area. The Island is known as a summer haven for artists with over 12 miles of wooded trails weaving along rocky coast line with beautiful vistas of open Atlantic. Do not miss the fairy trails! Head in to Linkein Bay anchorage for the evening and enjoy a kayak before dinner on the aft deck.
Day 4 Camden (35 Miles)
Get underway early and round Pemaquid Lighthouse en route for the picturesque town of Camden. Known for their fleet of coastal schooners and windjammers, Camden is one of Maine’s busiest and most interesting tourist stops which lies at the foot of Mount Battie. Guests can hike to the top of Mount Battie for gorgeous views of Camden Harbor and the Penobscot Bay. They can also paddle board in the harbor, take in the nearby shops, or indulge in a massage back on board the yacht.
Day 5 Penobscot Bay to Castine
From Camden we will continue deeper in to Penobscot bay to Castine. Castine is a nautical staple on the coast and home to Maine Maritime Academy, spend the afternoon taking in this unique town full of charm and character.
Day 6 Pulpit Harbor
Spend the day island hopping up the coast between North Haven and Vinal Haven. The first stop is a visit to Pulpit Harbor, a protected harbor on the island of North Haven. Leave Zoom here and jump in the tender to go to shore and explore the quaint island towns. Return to the yacht to freshen up and then head ashore to enjoy a private traditional Maine Lobster Bake on the beach prepared by your crew.
The rest of the trip will be spent enjoying Mount Desert Island, the largest island off the coast of Maine and home to Acadia National Park. Zoom will dodge lobster traps and picnic boats as she heads up the harbor to the small dock in the town of Northeast Harbor. Mainly a summer residence for most folks, shops are in walking distance from the boat. You can also take the tender across the harbor and hike up to the Asticou Azalea Garden.
Day 8 Somes Sound
After departing Northeast harbor enjoy a beautiful transit through Somes Sound into the heart of MDI to drop the anchor. Somes Sound is a large and deep body of water located in the lower mid-section of Mount Desert Island, whose cavity was formed by past glacier activity. This is a great place to use all of the toys that Zoom has to offer, including the slide if you dare to go for a dip in the refreshing Maine water.
Day 9 Bar Harbor
After a tranquil morning in Somes Sound, weight the anchor in route for Bar Harbor. This small town is bustling with activity. Spend the day hiking Arcadia National Park with a quick trip to Jordan Pond for popovers, a local delicacy. Return to the boat and catch the low tide for a walk across the sandbar to Bar Island for beach combing and tide pools full of sea life.
Day 10
Enjoy a final breakfast of Lobster Benedict on board and be sure to grab some lasting shots of Maine before departing from Bar Harbor Airport with memories to last a lifetime.
