Culinary Corner: Chefs Competitions in 21st and 9th Centuries

Annually, yacht chefs and cooks compete at the Caribbean and Mediterranean yacht charter shows – and we are there for it all! Top yacht chef competitions are both deliciously entertaining and tremendously helpful as charter brokers work hard to “pair” clients with chefs for the best possible results.

Everyone’s palate is different.  I have clients who request special diets from low salt, vegan, pescatarian, kosher, diabetic, kiddie fare, simple meat and potatoes to foodies requesting wine pairings with locally-sourced products.

We vet the “galley geniuses” who delight and nourish our clients, from professionally-trained chefs to “self-taught” food experts with influence from “mamma’s kitchen”.

The pricing of yachts and crew reflects this experience and one of the most important aspects of any vacation ~ food.
Yachts are no different. Except, all yacht vacations are customized from casual to fine dining.

Support for Food and Culture

A few years ago I joined the Boston Chapter of Les Dames D’Escoffier International. (Julia Child was also a member!) My involvement with LDEI has informed my understanding of food and culture and the work that’s being done around the world to share culinary traditions and excellence in hospitality.

The mission of this exciting philanthropic group is “to inspire, advance and support women in food, beverage and hospitality to achieve excellence in leadership and philanthropy”.

For the curious

Here’s a fun read about 9th-century cooking competitions from Atlas Obscura:

In Medieval Baghdad, Rulers Held Elite Cook-Offs

The “Iron Chef of medieval times” could have serious consequences.

In the food-obsessed culture of ninth-century Baghdad, being a foodie was essential to getting ahead. Stories abound of the caliphs’, or rulers’, passion for cooking, eating, and talking about good food. They even participated in cooking contests, including one that ended in near-execution and exile.
